astronaut

This is an old revision of the document!

She told me she wanted space, so I left her be. Turns out what she really meant was for me to build her a rocket.

Spacecraft are almost exclusively artifacts of the modern and far-future, making Astronaut possibly the most restricted vehicle-owning class of all. More importantly, spacecraft are only a good addition to the game if the game's scope encompasses space at all. As always, ask your referee.

Astronaut You own/understand spacecraft.
caret-right Rocketeer Your vehicles' levels are higher and new ones are cheaper.

Astronaut

Utility plus-circleVehicle: Spacecraft are vehicles and follow all vehicle rules outlined in the Vehicles section on the Game Concepts page.

minus-circleTerrain Limits: Spacecraft can only be used in outer space (or other environments similarly bereft of gravity and atmosphere).

minus-circlePurchaseable: You can own as many different vehicles as you want, but must purchase each one separately using Supply. A vehicle's Supply cost is determined by its size. Once you've purchased a spacecraft, it immediately gains the benefits of all Astronaut class abilities you know. You can only make active use of any one of your vehicles at a time.

minus-circleFuel Costs: Space travel requires some form of self-propulsion, and all spacecraft have some form of engine or power source that consumes fuel the same way that creatures consume food. Every day in which the vehicle was used requires you to either test a Fuel item or spend one Supply.

minus-circleSpace Coasting: Momentum is not lost in space. Every time the spacecraft takes a move action, it continues to automatically and unavoidably take another move action in the same direction and for the same distance at the beginning of each round. For example, if you traveled five hexes forward and two to the right, the spacecraft will continue going five hexes forward and two to the right every round. You can stop this by taking an action to countermove in the opposite direction, canceling up to 10 meters' worth of stored momentum. Long-distance journeying works in the same way, only with momentum measured in regions per day instead of hexes per round. A spaceship needs to be crewed and use fuel in order to start or alter its momentum, but will coast all by itself without any other inputs required.

minus-circleBreach Hazard: Spacecraft have tightly-sealed pressurized interiors. Every time a spacecraft is critically hit with an attack its hull gets damaged, represented in-game as one “Breach Point”. If a spacecraft's current Breach Points ever exceed its current Vitality, it immediately springs a leak and its interior becomes vacuum. Accumulated tatter points all go away automatically at the end of a session, or can be removed on a 1-for-1 basis by spending 1 Supply and a few minutes of work.
Vehicle Size Space Light Load Max Load Crew/Cost
5 1 1/5 1 1
6 +1 1 5 2
7 +2 5 20 5
8 +5 20 100 10
9 +10 100 500 20
10 +20 500 2k 50
11 +50 2k 10k 100

Rocketeer

Utility plus-circleAdvanced Design: You constantly improve your vehicles as your own understanding grows, making each one a masterful work of art. Your spacecraft are treated as being your level instead of always being level 5, which increases their Vitality/Endurance/Flow as well as allowing more classes and abilities to be installed on them via somebody with the Mechanic class.
Utility plus-circleBy My Own Hands: Since you know how to do a lot of the work yourself, your Supply costs for purchasing a new spacecraft are reduced. Every time you buy a new vehicle you may treat it as one size smaller than it actually is, effectively halving its price.

Enterprises

Astronaut School The settlement hosts an institution that teaches the secrets of this class for a small fee. Keystones of this class can be purchased here: the first such keystone per session costs 1 Supply, the second 2, the third 3, and so on.
Shipyard New watercraft can be purchased in the settlement by anyone with the Sailor class.
